I have to admit I had to dig a little deeper into oolong tea weight loss. Just as I wanted to see the differences in the benefits of oolong tea compared to the benefits of green tea, I also wanted to see if my suspicions were true that oolong tea weight loss was the same as green tea for weight loss.
I was actually surprised by what I ended up finding.
The information you’re going to find is inconsistent! And these articles I read during my research are supposed to be the best information on oolong and green tea! So why is there so much inconsistency?
Oolong tea isn’t as widely researched as green tea. The only information I could find on tea consumption by type was a fact sheet that was only for the United States. The findings reported in 2010 stated that “80% of all tea [consumed] was black tea, 19.5% was green tea, and a small amount was divided between oolong tea and white tea.”
I was actually surprised that oolong tea isn’t consumed all that much and I was even more surprised that green tea is consumed at only less than 20%!
But let’s talk about oolong tea weight loss…
Oolong Tea For Weight Loss
Please take note that my research on oolong tea weight loss came from scientific studies. Other information that I may present tended to be inconsistent, but I’m going to try my best to give you the information that I found that matched up with each other.
Just as green tea speeds up your metabolism, so does oolong tea. One idea was that the reason that your metabolism increased from drinking oolong tea was because of the caffeine. The caffeine content is not extremely high, but due to the natural properties of oolong tea, the caffeine and other antioxidants helped with weight loss.
Notice I said “helped.” Oolong tea does not “make” you lose weight.
It is an aid and is actually beneficial in helping you to burn more calories per day as compared to drinking straight water.
It is reported that oolong tea can actually cause your body to expend energy a lot more than green tea can, but there is also another report that states that green tea actually burns fat faster than oolong tea.
That is one of those inconsistencies I found and given that they came from different sources you don’t really see why that is inconsistent information.
If your body is using energy more with oolong tea then it means that you’re burning calories faster. And if you’re burning calories faster then you’re going to be burning fat faster.
The only thing I can really come up with is that combining oolong tea and weight loss work, but probably at different rates as compared to trying to lose weight by drinking green tea.
However, this article isn’t about green tea.
What Does Oolong Tea Actually Do For Weight Loss?
With the combination of the polymerized polyphenol antioxidants, EGCG, caffeine, and increased metabolisms, all of these things work together to help you burn or oxidize fat.
One study that I read found that a study conducted on rats found that those rats that consumed a high amount of calories along with oolong tea actually ended up storing less fat. Instead of the body holding onto the fat it was able to oxidize it and process it out of the body.
What is a Polymerized Polyphenol?
I quickly mentioned polymerized polyphenols and you’re probably thinking that reference is very specific. Polymerized comes from polymerization which is a chemistry process that creates a chemical reaction to form three-dimensional chains. I only wanted to explain what it was because it was a specific reference, but it is beyond the scope of this article.
Just note that oolong tea also contains polyphenol antioxidants, which just explain the structure of the chemical bond.
These polymerized polyphenols were found to more concentrated in oolong tea than in green tea, but the concentration of caffeine and EGCG were found to be higher in green tea. And due to the study that was conducted around this finding it was reported that it was the polymerized polyphenols that were actually the reason related to oolong tea weight loss and burning fat.
So in all of these findings we come to the conclusion that the weight loss properties of oolong tea come from its polyphenol antioxidants, caffeine, EGCG, and how it increases the metabolism in the body. Also, we found that oolong tea can help with the oxidization of fats related to what you eat. For example, it’s possible that if you drink oolong tea with dinner that your intake of what your body stores as fat may be lessened.
Oolong Tea For Weight Loss isn’t the Solution
As always, though, I have to emphasize the increased importance that any goal related to weight loss has to come as a complete package. You cannot just simply drink oolong tea and expect the pounds to drip off of you. Oolong tea weight loss is only to help you burn more energy.
Watch what you eat. Fat is greasy and so anything that you see as being greasy probably has a lot of fat in it.
If you can get rid of those greasy, fatty foods, drink oolong tea every day, and get yourself on an exercise routine, you will be well on your way to losing weight. It’s all about how many calories you burn, but you also have to remain healthy at the same time. And by remain healthy I mean, eating the correct foods in the correct portions.
The idea of weight loss is actually very simple when you learn how it works. The hardest part is getting yourself motivated to get up and to exercise consistently without giving up, along with sticking to a diet plan that you aren’t going to get bored of. Fight those cravings and go after what you want.
And don’t forget to enjoy some oolong tea while you’re at it.
